Summary
- •We do not run servers that store your journal entries.
- •If you enable Cloud Sync/Backup, your data is stored in your connected cloud account (for example, iCloud Drive or Google Drive).
- •If you enable Private Sync (end-to-end encryption), your journal entries and attachments are encrypted on your device before upload and we cannot decrypt that content.
- •Some non-content metadata may remain unencrypted (for example, collection/folder names and basic timestamps) to support sync and organization.
1) Information We Collect
- Information you create: journal entries, titles, tags, moods, attachments (photos/audio/sketches), and exported books (PDFs).
- Account identifiers (optional): if you sign in, we receive basic identifiers from your authentication provider (e.g., a user ID and email address, if available).
- App settings (optional): theme, onboarding state, reminder settings, sync preferences, and other preferences you choose to enable.
- Permissions (only when you use a feature): Camera, Microphone, Photos, Location, and Notifications.
- Usage metadata (local only): sync streaks, storage usage statistics, and feature engagement—stored locally on your device to personalize your experience.
2) How We Use Information
- Provide core journaling features (create, edit, search, and view entries).
- Enable optional features you turn on (location tagging, audio notes, reminders, cloud backup/sync, book export).
- Maintain app security (passcode/biometric lock, privacy screen).
- Respond to support requests if you contact us.
3) Cloud Sync/Backup and End-to-End Encryption
Unfold is designed to work offline. If you enable Cloud Sync/Backup, your data may be stored with your chosen provider.
- Cloud providers: iCloud Drive and/or Google Drive (depending on platform and what you connect).
- Private Sync (E2EE): if enabled, your supported journal content, attachments, and exported books are encrypted on-device before upload. Your encryption password and recovery key are not sent to us. Keep your recovery key safe—if you lose both your password and recovery key, you may permanently lose access to encrypted data.
- What E2EE does not cover: some metadata may remain unencrypted (for example, collection/folder names and basic timestamps) to support sync coordination.
- Switching providers: you can migrate your data between cloud providers (e.g., from iCloud to Google Drive). During migration, your data is copied to the new provider and optionally removed from the old one. If Private Sync is enabled, data remains encrypted throughout the migration process.
- Vault namespacing: your data is stored in a unique vault namespace on your cloud provider to prevent conflicts with other apps or accounts.
- Device unlock: you may enable "Unlock with Face ID/biometrics" to make unlocking more convenient. This uses your device's secure storage and may persist across reinstalls on some platforms.
4) Location Data
If you enable location tagging, Unfold may request your location to attach it to entries. You can deny this permission or disable it in system settings.
5) Photos, Audio, and Sketches
If you attach photos, record audio, or create sketches, those files are stored locally on your device and may be included in your backups/sync depending on your configuration.
If you export or create backups, treat exported files as sensitive. Your device and cloud provider settings (and whether you enable Private Sync) affect how those exports/backups are protected.
6) Books and PDF Export
Unfold allows you to compile journal entries into "Books"—PDF documents that you can save, share, or print.
- Local generation: Books are generated entirely on your device.
- Cloud storage (optional): If cloud sync is enabled, your books may be stored in your connected cloud account. If Private Sync is enabled, books are encrypted before upload.
- Sharing: When you share a book, it leaves the app via your device's share sheet. We do not track or intercept shared content.
7) Notifications
If you enable reminders, Unfold schedules notifications on your device. You can disable them anytime in the app or in system settings.
8) Purchases and Subscriptions
Unfold may offer subscriptions and trials. Purchases are processed by Apple App Store or Google Play. Subscription status may be managed via a third-party provider (e.g., RevenueCat). We do not receive your full payment card details.
9) Service Providers
We use the following service providers to operate optional features you enable:
- Firebase (Google): used for authentication and optional metadata sync (preferences/settings). We do not store journal entries in Firebase.
- RevenueCat: used to manage subscriptions and entitlement status.
- Apple / Google: used for purchases and sign-in flows you enable.
- iCloud Drive / Google Drive: used only if you enable cloud backup/sync and connect an account.
10) Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell your personal information.
We may share information only in these cases:
- With your direction: when you export/share content (e.g., share a PDF book).
- Service providers: to operate features you enable.
- Legal requirements: to comply with applicable law or valid legal process.
11) Data Retention
Local data remains on your device unless you delete it. If you enable cloud backup/sync, your data may remain in your cloud provider until you delete it there and/or disable sync and remove backups. When switching cloud providers, you can choose to remove data from the previous provider after migration.
12) Security
We use reasonable safeguards designed to protect your information, including end-to-end encryption for Private Sync, secure key derivation, and local biometric authentication. No method of storage is 100% secure.
13) Children
Unfold is not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us.
14) Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above.
